Hear from WINGS CEO, CFO, Board President, and program graduate as they share their thoughts on the importance of a safe home in WINGS new video.
“I think home is the most important space in the world.”
“Home is the place where you feel like you can be yourself, that you can be loved.”
It can often be easy to take for granted what it feels like to have safe home. For domestic violence survivors, often home is a place of trauma, fear, and uncertainty.
“When we take the kids into WINGS, we try to create a special home for them,” Rebecca Darr, WINGS CEO shares.
WINGS operates welcoming Safe Houses and Transitional Housing programs where families and individuals can begin to heal and evaluate their next steps in life. Children have play areas, comfortable sleeping spaces, and rooms conducive to working on schoolwork.
“At the beginning they may need simple things; basic needs clothing, food, and shelter. As they settle in and start to heal, we then offer them the various supports they need,” Denise Urban, WINGS CFO shares.
In addition to basic needs, WINGS provides access to a number of stabilizing resources: counseling, support groups, employment assistance, affordable housing information, safety planning, comprehensive children’s supports, and more. WINGS works one on one with survivors address their families’ challenges, learn about healthy relationships, and ultimately obtain a safe place to call home for their family.
“They opened so many doors to me. They made me feel at home. They made my children feel at home,” Xochyl, WINGS Graduate shares.
