This summer, WINGS Annual Celebration of Courage honored 11 survivor graduates and their children through a virtual celebration. Graduates shared inspirational messages and WINGS impact on their journey to freedom.

Words WINGS staff used to describe the accomplishments of the children in the program.

Additionally, each current client and child in the program was recognized for the goals they have achieved. Their Children’s Advocate shared each child’s individual successes and pictured above are some of their many achievements.

To kick off the celebration, local musician Lisa performed the song “Unstoppable” on her acoustic guitar.

After the moving performance, WINGS staff recognized each adult and child graduate one by one for their achievements.

Graduates Shared Heartfelt Messages

Several graduates sent in uplifting videos reflecting on their time at WINGS. Hearing from clients directly in their own words about the journey with WINGS was inspiring.

  • Many mentioned initially feeling nervous or broken when they first came to WINGS.
  • Most shared specific examples of how and who at WINGS has helped them.
  • All shared gratitude for WINGS and radiated optimism.

Receiving Their Wings

Rebecca Darr, WINGS President & CEO presented clients with their wings, a symbolic gift, to honor their achievements in the program. Rebecca shared, “You all should be so proud of what you have persisted through. It takes tremendous courage. You are not just survivors, you are thrivers.

I am so happy for your accomplishments. It will ripple to your children. As I celebrate 25 years with WINGS, I have seen children grow up to be healthy and happy. Thank you for your hard work and having trust in the staff and volunteers. We all want nothing but the best for you. I wish all our graduates well and remember we are always here for you.”

Words WINGS staff used to describe this year’s adult graduates.

Closing Remarks

Graduates were offered the opportunity to keep in touch with WINGS through the Alumni Association, mentoring opportunities through the agency’s award-winning Survivor Lifeline program, or joining a Client Advisory Board.

La Tonya Walker, WINGS Chief Program Officer shared closing remarks:

“Graduates: Today, we celebrate you.

We celebrate the courage it took to make the call, complete the assessment, to move into unknown territory, and trust us with your most intimate and authentic selves…

As you move forward in your journey, know that this is just one leg of your race.

  • You moved into permanent housing,
  • You have obtained full-time employment,
  • You have saved,
  • You have reunited with family.

Take a moment to be proud of yourselves because we truly are proud of you. As we depart this evening, you will hear this for the third time: once you enter WINGS, you are a part of the WINGS family.

As you leave, we want you to know that we think about you often and we think about your families. We remember the times we have shared together. Please keep in touch…Keep doing great work. Hats off to you.”
