Eight-year-old Kelly made many children smile when she recently donated new toys for children at our WINGS Metro Safe House. She was able to make this caring donation as a result of her successful, customized candle making business: Lite Up Your Moments By Kelly.
A crafter since she was two-years-old, Kelly is also a model student in both academics and character. With an interest in science and a perfectionist outlook, she thought about ways to turn her passion for crafting into a business.
A Young Entrepreneur and Philanthropist
“When the pandemic hit, I began making candles so I wouldn’t get bored,” Kelly shares.
She started her own customized and handmade candle business. She honed and perfected her craft by watching tutorials on YouTube.
However, one important aspect of her entrepreneurial spirit is being able to help others. Kelly donates to a non-profit every month.
“Kelly is very generous. She finds causes and latches on to them. Right now, she is very serious about children and animal causes. She never wants attention on her, but just wants to help,” Kelly’s mother Charisma shares, “For example, one time when she was pre-k, she made her older brother a lunch just to help get him ready for school.”
Kelly Learns About WINGS
When Charisma, a survivor of domestic violence, told Kelly that some children might need to leave behind their items to make a fresh start, Kelly felt the need to help out. She soon learned about WINGS.
Using proceeds from her business, Kelly bought new gifts for children staying at WINGS Metro Safe House.
“I am so impressed by this young entrepreneur and her caring heart,” Carline, WINGS Senior Manager of WINGS Metro says, “This past year, we have seen youth disclosing higher rates of trauma, and these gifts are just one way we work to help these young people heal and increase their self-esteem.”
Charisma reflects, “We are so proud of Kelly. She is a giver and wants to take care of everybody…While Kelly is the baby of five siblings, she has always been an old soul.”
“We are planning to donate items again to WINGS this holiday season,” Kelly shares.
