Here at WINGS, we are encouraged by the recent U.S. Supreme Court’s 8-1 decision that upholds a federal law prohibiting people subject to domestic violence orders of protection from having firearms.
Listen to WINGS President & CEO Rebecca Darr’s response to ABC7 Chicago:
This decision reverses a troubling ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals Fifth Circuit that individuals had constitutional rights to possess firearms even if they had an order of protection against them.
We know that if an abuser has access to a firearm, the risk of a domestic violence homicide increases 500%. The most dangerous time for survivors is when they are leaving an abusive relationship. The Supreme Court’s ruling shows that survivors deserve protection and that their lives are valued.
This common-sense action saves lives and makes our communities safer.
Here in Illinois, we have been advocating for the passing of Karina’s Bill. This bill would require judges to issue a gun seizure order along with an order of protection. Law enforcement would then be required to serve the order and remove the weapon within 48 hours.
