The 13th annual Sweet Home Chicago fundraiser was held Dec. 11 at the Four Seasons Hotel to benefit WINGS, an agency that provides safe houses and support for families affected by domestic violence. The family-friendly brunch raised over $1 million and attracted more than 400 supporters, including 202 children, who enjoyed an afternoon filled with a variety of activities.
Balloon artists, Santa and Mrs. Claus and even K-9 Comfort Dogs from Lutheran Church Charities entertained the kids. The dogs were a big draw, as children petted and posed beside golden retrievers Luther, Hanna, Jacob and Ruthie, who was recently named Dog of the Year by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for her disaster-response work. Handler Richard Martin said, “Children love these dogs for the calming influence they bring. It allows them to open up their hearts and receive help for what is affecting them.” Each participant received a stuffed toy replica of a dog.
